Miscarriage is the most common complication of early pregnancy. It affects 15 to 20 percent of all pregnancies. Successive miscarriages is defined as having two or more consecutive early miscarriages.

This study found that mothers who are underweight (having a Body Mass Index score of less than 18.5), overweight (having BMI between 25 and 30) and obese (having BMI above 30) show higher incidences of having successive miscarriages.

The research team, however, has not been able to conclusively link these miscarriages to lifestyle factors such as smoking and consumption of alcohol and caffeine. More studies will need to be conducted with larger samples of pregnant women.
